Nikon Slide Feeder Jamming Problem?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am considering buying the LS-2000 scanner/SF-200 feeder combo.

The review here, and some posts elsewhere, have suggested that the feeder has a problem jamming with older cardboard mounts. Since this is 99% of the slide mounts I'll be working with, I need to find out how serious this is.

The review also mentions a "slide gate" to get around this problem, but I've been unable to track down just what this is, how to make or acquire it, etc.

Any info on this problem's occurrence, and how to fix it, will be appreciated.

I haven't checked there in a long time, but the nikon tech site (www.nikontechusa.com) had an extensive tech-support discussion list. There were a fair number of tips over there on avoiding the problem. The key seemed to be to shim the point at which the slides enter the scanner, so that only one would fit into the throat. As I recall, this was typically done by sticking a thin piece of plastic onto the place where the slides rest, at the front of the feeder, keeping the edge of the next slide in the line out of way of the entry throat. Don't rely on these sketchy recollections though, go over to nikontech and see what others have done. FWIW, once the fairly simple-sounding modification was made, the units appeared to work quite well with cardboard mounts.

How about it? Any LS-2000/bulk feeder users out there with relevant experience? (I'm interested personally, as I have an LS-2000 myself, and have a TON of my Dad's old slides from trips to Alaska that I'd like to get into digital form: A feeder will likely be another purchase later this year!)
