Disconnect Grid?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Given the highly interconnected and interdependent nature of the three major grids, and the possiblity for a "weakest link" cascade situation, could the utilties all disconnect prior to y2k, and thereby increasing the chances of continued power in individual locations?

Assuming that some plants stay up and others go down, it would seem that this would be a "safe" strategy since the ones that are still up could help the ones that go down, like they do now during hurricanes, etc.

I'm sure it's been considered, but what are the reasons for not implementing it (aside from regular old denial)?

You might look at today's (01/22) "Powerful Prognostications" column by Dick Mills, on the Westergaard Year 2000 site (y2ktimebomb.com), and also his previous column on this subject, which he calls "balkanization".
