APS film scanners - Does APS have to be processed?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Does an Advanced Processing System (APS) film scanner, like the Minolta Dual Scan, require the APS cassette to be processed by a lab before it can be scanned? If so, if someone attempted to scan an unprocessed APS, what would happen?

Absolutely!! Until it's processed, the film is light-sensitive, and would have any visible image on it anyway. If you try to "scan" unprocessed APS film, the scanner's light source will expose the entire roll for you, destroying any images you might have had! (I don't know if there's any safety lockout on the cartridges to indicate whether they've been processed yet or not, but I wouldn't suggest experimenting with a roll you care about!)
