graphic format d-400

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am thinking about bying an olympus d-400 and using the graphics in photoshop, painter, and on the web. I note that the spec sheet on the camera says that the file format is EXIF(?). Is this a file ext. or is this just another name for jpeg & tiff images? Will I be able to open the files (EXIF) in these programs? Forgive my stupididy, but I just thought that it best to ask before i try to open the images only to find that I can't in these programs.

I have a D-400Z. The images come in as standard JPEG files.

Yes, EXIF is an extension of the JPEG format that's transparent to imaging programs. The EXIF extension allows the cameras to bury information on exposure time, etc into the JPEG format, without affecting the readability of the files by host computers. (And yes, actually EXIF also encompasses TIFF as well. The D400 writes JPEG in standard modes, and TIFF in its uncompressed mode.)
