The release of the NERC report reminded me that I had compiled statistics around the time of the last report to see who was generating what type of power where (e.g., nukes in the NE, etc.). Of the 9,000 companies involved in power delivery in the US, only 1,051 generate power. Of these 1,051 utilities, 130 of them produce 90% of the total power generated in the US. 30 of them produce 50% of the total power produced in the US. The big hitters are listed below. These 30 companies produce a total of 50% of the nation's power, and they are approx. the only companies that produce 1% or more of the total.

If these companies are in trouble, then there's big trouble. OTOH, if these 30 are in good shape, it most likely means no problems for electricity at 1/1/2000.
