Canon ElanIIe/75-300 USM f/5.6.....i'm very concerned about the composition of this photo, as well as the choice of depth of field...nothing has been cropped....yet....

With the exception of right hand side (which I would crop), it is a well exposed and well exposed image. There is a nice and soft quality of light in the image. well done.

Amy,

This is very well done: the light is nice and the bird's colors look very true. The two things that distract me are the two leaves that are badly placed. One is the green one right in front of the bird's bill and the other is the brown one on the right.

The bird's pose, the water, the reflections all look very good. Especially the pose, which looks very natural and characteristic of a limpkin. A catchlight would be nice, but I don't feel they are always necessary; in this case the eye is well defined without the catchlight.

I like the "feel" of the photograph. The bird has a natural, playful feel to it. Unfortunately, I don't think the depth of field works. The bird looks soft on my monitor, and the two blurry green leaves in the foreground are distracting. You could crop out the leftmost leaf, but I'm afraid that might make the bird look too cramped. I like the open space on the left-hand side that the bird appears to be wandering into.

Amy, I echo some of the others comments. If the distracting leaves and branches weren't there I think this would be a great shot of the Limpkin. I love the way it is walking into the frame and how you've left it some lead room on the left. The bird looks sharp on my screen. Nice light and detail in the feathers too.

Thank you all for your comments....i was too very concerned about the blurry leaves....however, i thought the bird came out nicely....i'm not going to throw away this photo, but i am going to try again...there is always a pair of limpkins somewhere at this lake! thanks :)
