Why is rain called Pineapple juice?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Hawaii : One Thread

My mom used to live in Hawaii and she said every morning just around sunrise, there is a light rain shower/mist that she said people caled pineapple juice. Is this even remotely true? What causes it?

Response to Pineapple juice?

It is true that it does rain just about every morning and evening along the mountains. Our standard forcast is for "evening and morning mauka (mountain) showers." Semi-scientific reason is because of the hot air masses crashing into the mountains and rising into the cooler air and clouds that the mountains have stopped. Pretty much happens on each island. Haven't called it pineapple juice, but then again each island calls the same thing different names.
