KODAK DC260 AND USB PORT

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Had a question about using the USB port when downloading pictures from the Kodak DC260 Camera. What is the difference between using the USB port or a card reader (either internal or external)? I see by some information, the USB port will allow the photos to be downloaded up to 10 - 12 times quicker than using the serial port cable that comes with the camera. Is it worth the money ($30 - $40) to invest in a USB port or should I put the money in a external card reader ($60). Thanks.

The USB is the way to go. This will allow other USB resources to be hooked to your computer when they become available. The card reader will just read cards... I have been in the computer hardware world for quite awhile and have not seen an add on USB port for computers. (haven't looked real hard since all new cpu's come with them on the motherboard)

The only problem you might have is getting the USB drivers to work properly... good luck

Most motherboards made in the last few years have USB circuitry on them, you'd just need the right cables to bring it out. BIG CAUTIONS HERE THOUGH! 1) My PC mfr shipped me the wrong cable, and it shorted out a "micro fuse" on the motherboard. - This would kill your motherboard, unless you're handy with a soldering iron. (I am, but I had a few heart palpitations along the way!) 2) Unless you're running at least Windows 95 "B" (Service Release 2) or better yet Windows 98, *don't do it* as your machine won't be able to use the USB ports at all. I upgraded Win 95 "A" to "B", and it was a hairy experience.

Other than that, if you're running Win98, USB is a great way to go, very fast and convenient.

I have seen pci cards that will give you USB ports to use. All you need is a computer with a free PCI slot. But check to see if you need to get any BIOS upgrade. W98 may be enough.
