BLACKOUT?:Utilitycompani 01-10 0124BLACK OUT?: Utility companies brace for 2000

Associated Press, 01/10/99 14:54

BOSTON - Ordinarily, turning the light on is as easy as a flip of the switch. New England utility companies are racing the clock to ensure it's still that simple when the year 2000 arrives.

The suppliers of electricity, gas and other everyday necessities are among thousands of companies facing big trouble when it comes to the so-called Y2K problem. Several say they will miss this year's self-imposed June deadline. Boston Edison, which serves much of Massachusetts, won't be ready until mid-July. And Northeast utilities, which serves western Massachusetts and most of Connecticut and New Hampshire, also expects to miss the June date.

There is also an interesting article on the front page of the Boston Globe today.
