What in Hades are all you people scared of?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi~!, I have been going thru the last weeks posts. I am ashamed of you all. What if Y2K is a problem, 1 or 10? What damn difference does it make? You & I can prepare, light or large, but it's gonna happen, to some degree, I guess. I am not affiliated with any co. or source for knowing the behind the scenes stuff. Ok, we have a 1, screw it. We have a 10, screw it! Life goes on, We may havta adjust & make changes, but can't we do this? Give it up, dooms-sayers!

I guess Milne is right after all. Some people really deserve Y2K. Thanks, dude, I guess I needed a push to see that one.

PnkPantha, your the kind of person I am most afraid of. People like you that give up and don't care if they live or die will be a big problem if Y2k hits hard. Even the pollyannas will be less problem than a person with your attitude. I happen to be a person that thinks were going to have minor->moderate problems but I sure as HADES am not giving up even if we have severe problems. If you maintain your "don't give a damn, life goes on" attitude I suspect your going to be in the way when the rest of us people are trying to fix the problems that will arise. By the way if we have a "10" life WILL NOT go on for some of us.

Gotta admit pantha guy...Seems to be revitilising some people towards what I like to call...The indepentent American Spirit. Can do kinda guys these Americans don't you think.

-- Mark Hillyard (foster@inreach.com), January 10, 1999.

Oh! Sorry, I forgot. No thinking allowed! Especially if it guides people towards FREEEEDOOOOM!

-- Mark Hillyard (foster@inreach.com), January 10, 1999.

From one point of view, the more people who "don't care" the better. If the power and the water and the food runs out, they won't be knocking on other folks' doors looking for a handout. They'll just lay down and wait for the end.

But in the real world, anybody who says "Ok, we have a 1, screw it. We have a 10, screw it!" is simply making up stories. If that indifference were genuine, that person have no reason to read this forum, or to post to it, and for sure wouldn't care what anyone else was doing.

Just a question? Let's assume each of you has carefully prepared for worst case Y2K events. Let's also assume that prior to the event- a fire or whatever destroys all of your personal preparations.

Just how long is it, now that you are in same boat as the non- prepared, will it be before YOU rob and kill your own neighbors for their food and water etc.?

There is absolutely no reason to believe that the vast majority of people -the people that make this country great- will turn into mobs because of hard times. Even REALLY HARD TIMES. Our history proves otherwise. If you are looking for demons, look in the mirror- they may be closer than you think.

We all know what assumes means, it makes an ASS out of U and ME.

-- navajojoe (navajojoe@puff.com), January 11, 1999.

yo! jnitsuj - suggest you tell that to anyone who has lived through a riot...but I suggest you do so from a safe distance as their sense of humor may not be all you are presuming...

-- Arlin H. Adams (ahadams@ix.netcom.com), January 11, 1999.

JNITSUJ...I don't understand your logic. You are taking an affirmative step (my storing food and supplies) and throwing in an unknown such as a fire. Sure, I have thought about that, but how far can we carry the possibilities? Would I turn into a robber/murderer etc? I honestly cannot say. I THINK before taking from, hurting and stealing from others, and only as a last resort, I would take my own life. AT THIS TIME, I feel that way and I hope I always do.

To quote you: There is absolutely no reason to believe that the vast majority of people -the people that make this country great- will turn into mobs because of hard times. Even REALLY HARD TIMES. Our history proves otherwise. If you are looking for demons, look in the mirror- they may be closer than you think.

Oh really? When was the last time this country REALLY needed to pull together? 12/07/41??? Let's get real. The apathy in this country has grown exponentially for decades. We no longer have much National Pride. Even in the 60's and early 70's we had Hippies, who in their own way CARED. They were not the apathetic couch potato- sound-bite emersed population we have become. We've become a society of lemmings...we will follow the others regardless of the destination. If a few speak out a warning, they will be ignored and when the few are proven to be right, the others WILL turn. There WILL be angry mobs if things are bad enough. How bad do they have to be? Look at Christmas sales of Furbies...Tickle Me Elmos Cabbage Patch Dolls. ETC.! WE ARE TALKING FOOD HERE. NOBODY ELSE WILL HAVE ANY!

Yes, I firmly believe we as Americans CAN pull it together and work together like folks did in WWII IF and only IF, there is:

1 : Sufficient education of the general public with strong leadership from our politicians. (NOT martial Law)

2: Thourough preparation by the utilities.

3: HONEST reporting of preparedness status, local, state, fed.

4: Educated preperation by the general population.

If my food storage goes up in flames or meets some other demise, at least I tried. I will have at least done my part to ensure my and my loved one's survival. What will you have done?

So what are you going to do when you find out that the house of cards has fallen on you? What kind of answer can you give yourself when you have failed to plan!Because if you fail to plan, you plan to fail! How do you explain to those people who count on you, that you just didn't think it would be that bad? If I am wrong I can recover, however if you are wrong you will be the one thats screwed!!! Take a real close look check out www.russkelly.com the experts page. These are some of the best programmers in the world talking. There are no second chances once the y2k ax falls come 00. You still have 355 days, you deal!

Our new poster has an address that is familiar - has used the handle "Randy" in some forums (fora?), rather than "PnkPantha". Any reason for the change? Just curious; as an anon poster m'self, I certainly understand the desire for anonymity.

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.com), January 11, 1999.

Fires may come, and wipe out my preparations...

The real point was in the preparing.

The important thing is to be a person with enough integrity to try something else before / other than begging. That's not the first impulse of an mature adult.

"Life goes on" - it's really amazing. Americans, in this era - we really don't have the slightest idea how good we have it, do we?

-- Grrr (grrr@grrr.net), January 11, 1999.

So he's assuming that if I lose (through fire or whatever) all of what I have prepared, that I'll go rioting or stealing. Ok - lets assume that's true. Won't happen, but lets assume its true.

So he's using to show that all the other people - who never did prepare - but who are equally if not more cold, wet, hungry, and thirsty than I am - and who choose never to prepare - will just lie down and accept it????? Without rioting or stealing or burning things?

If isn't that effect enough to be worried about? However, note that if nothing happens (it's a bump in the road!) then there will be no "need" for anyone to riot or worry. So what's he worried about me rioting or stealing if there is nothing going to happen?
