What lengths will the unprepared go to?

"After speaking to a customer that I do business with on y2k, here is what he told me:

"It will not be that bad. It is being fixed. People who prepare by taking all their money from the banks are the real problem. They will cause the banks to crash if the banks crash. Then I asked him what would he do for food assuming that their was a run on grocery stores and a shortage on food, he looked me in the eye and said, "I will just come and take it." I have to assume he meant that he would go wherever food was available to get it by any means necessary. He figured that if he was hungry that he would just "go and get it." Here is the scary part. This man was not fresh out of prison after serving 10 years for armed robbery. He was a legitimate businessman as clean cut as they come. I would have never thought of him as being a robber of food. Think about that before you decide to stay in the city. The evil side of man will be quickly revealed. Your friendly next door neighbor had better get prepared or you might have a problem if you do not feed him/her."

Flak jackets, anyone???

And these people call us wacko. Twilight Zone indeed.

It's getting wierderer and weirderer.

These people are why I now have zero tolerance for "bump in the roaders" who point at a .004 power plant compliance rate and call it "good news." Everyone who discourages SERIOUS individual and community preparation now is contributing to the many deaths that will result in 2000.

All these people who laugh at preparation WILL become a mob, on their own, or in support of any local or national program of food (and of course, weapons) confiscation. It's the DGI "we'll just come to your house" response, writ large. Some people are so used to suckling on the govt/corporate techno-titty that they can no longer distiguish between where the titty ends and their sorry brain-pan begins. The thought that it could run dry is unthinkable. When the unthinkable happens, they will lose their misplaced faith, and their minds. My message to them: don't lose it in my neighborhood.

That's .004%

E-

I enjoy reading your posts. Seems you took a short hiatus for awhile, and wondered whether you abandoned the forum which sounds reasonable at times, considering the amount of trolling, sniping and harrassment that goes on.

I like Hardliners approach to the freshness that DGI's contribute. On the other hand their views are often met with attack, and derision when often times DGI's contribute a new level of discourse. I felt Paul Milnes frustration, but come on, his harrassment of this individual is like the mentality of a sixth grader.

Let's face it, the monumental proportion of DGI'S are part of this social disease in Y2k. A guest of Art Bell suggested the Titanic analogy. The unsinkable Titanic belief brought incredible loss of life. Will the indestructable technology belief cause the same loss of life. Based on the DGI Disease, it seems incredibly realistic.

Today my very good friend immediately dismissed my documentation as "Y2k Propaganda." After evesdropping my conversation with the secretary about the need for preparations, I mentioned the need to empower communities and he stormed out, accusing me of propagating Y2k hyperbole. My documentation was in fact promoting a global satellite video forum through Resilientcommunties.org about "Inviting Leadership: Finding Our Role in Resilient Communities." Fear brings out the very best and the very worst in people.

MC, quite clear headed post of your own (but don't swell your head, easy to say, coming from me ;-) )

You said "I like Hardliners approach to the freshness that DGI's contribute. Indeed DGI's help the GI's stay on their toes and keep them thinking hard. The way I see it though, many DGI's of the troll category are simply opposits of Milne. Yin and Yang ;-)

What's a "DGI"? What is a "GI"? What is meant by "troll"? It seems a Y2k jargon is cropping up here.

Geoffrey,

GI=Get It (i.e., someone who quickly comprehends the potentially far-reaching ramifactions of Y2k,) a.k.a. "a-doom-and-gloomer", a.k.a. "a realist"

DGI=Don't Get It (the converse), a.k.a. "a pollyanna", a.k.a "a realist"

Troll=A purposefully disruptive, abusive, and/or obscene poster, usually having no desire to meaningfully contribute to the topic at hand

An old survival book gave some possible statistics for how far a person might go. In it the author said "1 out of 10 people will stela for food, 1 out of 100 will kill for food, 1 out of 1000 will hunt people for food." I think he's being very conservative there. The current US population is somewhere in the neighborhood of 270 million.

The question that titles this thread precludes the complete answer!

The relevent question is, "What lengths will anyone go to?

All of Life is programmed by Nature with a "Prime Directive" that is unqualified: SURVIVE!

All other such directives, whether Natural or adopted by Mankind, have a lower priority and relate in a positive reinforcing or explanatory way to the first one.

The simple answer is that there are NO limits on the lengths that anyone will go to in order to survive.

A discussion of what constitutes survival (individual v. species survival, for example) is appropriate.

Behavior that seemingly contradicts the "Natural Prime Directive" is explained in light of such and in examination of individuals who have not acquired a set of behaviors that consists of solely those with positive survival characteristics. No individuals nor all species even, exhibit such a set.

The proof is in the record that when a situation or circumstance calls for such behavior and the individual or species fails to deliver it, either the individual, instantly, or the species, cumulatively, does not continue to survive.
