maps of the power grid anywhere?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any maps of the power grid available...showing the 3 main grids, along with the regions that each grid is made up of. I think using a map such as this would make it easier to explain the interconnectedness of the industry, to people in our community. Thank you for any help you can give me. Nancy

Nancy, back in August Rick gave this answer to someone else asking about maps:

There's two good maps that I'm aware of:

http://www.yardeni.com/public/y_19971208.pdf (note that you will need the adobe reader for this one)

There is also a map of the NERC Regional Councils at:

Hi Nancy,

This may or may not be helpful...

NERC has a really nice map available from their web site, showing not only the individual regions, but also other goodies. They describe it as follows:

97 Transmission Line Map (Triennial) A 40" x 54" color map of electric transmission lines (230 kV and above), substations, and generating stations in the United States and Canada. ($50 to non-members)

I recently got one, to use for the very same purpose you are contemplating. Since I'm an electrical engineer at a public utility, and thereby considered a "member" of NERC, I got it for free. $50 is a lot to pay for a piece of paper, but I guess it depends upon how bad you want it... If you know someone at your local utility, they might be pursuaded to order one for you...

The URL is: http://www.nerc.com/publications/misc.html

FYI, Bruce
