EURO Clearing and Settlement Problems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As I predicted, give it 2 or 3 days for the critters to surface...

CNBC just reported Euro settlement problems. No details yet. Just a brief mention at about 2:35 p.m. EST. Come nearer said the spider to the fly...

On another note Paul Davis and pshannon, instead of attacking Mr. Milne's mathematical abilities (hey, who's perfect, a computer??? hmmm), why haven't either of you bothered to answer the quite simple challenge I issued a couple of days ago. Same goes for John Howard.

Why are you ducking the issue -

I think we should be told. If you can't or won't, fess up and give your reasons...

Andy, my understand of the Jo Anne effect is that it too may take a while to get noticed, since it essentially causes transactions to get posted to incorrect (fiscal) years.

People seem to have different definitions of the JAE I agree. I believe the EURO is a law unto itself, but may also have JAEffects too!

I can't see how the Euro wont have some major, major problems this year and only have them compounded upon over the actual roll over. This is a huge undertaking with a massive, massive chance for complete failure. It would have been a miracle if Euro didn't have major problems. It will be a miracle if the Euro doesn't collapse within the next couple of years altogether.

oh, I don't think that computer code is the only reason why the Euro has a high possibility of failure. I think regional politics are the biggest threat to the Euro.

From Dave E.

"the Euro's down to 1.1600 against the dollar as opposed to 1.1833.

This could be a good time to place bets in both directions as it flutters up and down the scale (around 1.17 I'd guess) while the teething problems are ironed out.

Well, I hope they're "teething" problems! Make it an "each-way" bet :)"

And.....? A brand new system, installed in an amazing amount of time over a weekend, and you didn't expect a few bugs? I say yay for the bugs because that means they got reported and were not hidden. But I think it is a little early to be calling this the fall of the Euro. It might very well happen, but I wouldn't be so hasty to rush to speak of it's demise (this is more towards everyone, not just you Andy)

(*disclaimer* honestly I am not a fan of the Euro, but I alawys believe in calling a spade a spade)
