Not as bad

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Since the NERC Report this past fall, I keep hearing that the electric utilities will be fine since the problems (when finally assessed) were not as bad as expected. What is it that was not as bad? If these were not as bad then why are they spending more than planned and why are they so far behind in their spending compared to the time left? I have a feeling that relevant information is bad news and not for disemination. Kostigan? said the other day that he is very concerned about the railroads. To me this is the same as being very concerned about the electric utilities. I thought that post from the Yourdon site the other day which gave the views of a utility manager was quite good. I think that is the type of information I need more of today. What an emotional up and down ride for me. ....Just needed to vent...Thanks

Mike, there's some comments about the varying information we're getting on the 1/3/1999 question "Excerpts From Chicago Tribune..".

You brought up a good point about the railroads and Mr. Koskinen's statement of concern. The railroads are vital to supplying coal fired generating plants. I've noticed before that Mr. Koskinen tends to focus his "news" on individual infrastructure sections and not the interconnections between them all. He's also "concerned" about many global infrastructure areas, but seldom alludes to the fact that failures outside the U.S. could seriously affect us.

It's good you're looking at the forest and not just the trees. Hope you feel better for venting! Everyone who is looking at the comprehensive picture can't help but get frustrated at times!
