Can you just add bigger media cards to a camera?

Maybe I missed something, but can you just add a bigger memory card to a camera? Many ship with miserable 4MB cards, but 16 and 32 MB cards are readily available off the shelf, so can you just add one of these and go for it, or is the camera only able to format cards up to a certain size?

The short answer is "it depends." If your camera uses Compact Flash cards, you're almost certainly all set to use larger cards. The smaller SmartMedia cards (also called SSFDC cards) went through a format change recently: All SmartMedia cameras will accept cards up to 8MB, but only the most recently designed will handle the larger 16MB cards. 32MB cards aren't out quite yet (another month or so), but * presumably* they will work in cameras that also handle 16MB cards.

You don't typically "add" memory cards to cameras - most have removable cards, and you just unplug one and plug in the larger size.
