network strangeness

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask William : One Thread

i've got a linux server in my house. whenever i try to make some sort of network connection to it (telnet, ftp, whatever), there is a delay of 30 seconds or so before any data passes over the connection. the computer claims the connection has been made, but there is a delay with all protocols that use inetd and tcpd. are there any strange options i may have inadvertantly disabled/enabled (or didn't explicitly disable/enable) to cause this to happen?

Hmm.... an interesting dilemma. Sounds like you're running PPP or something over a modem and trying to get into the "local" net from the "world" net. Happens a bunch.... try rebooting and all that other sissy crap.

twiddlebit? what the hell kind of name is that? :P
