Any decent free scan-to-JPEG software

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I recently purchased an Artec ViewStation AS6E scanner. Compared to the Microtek ScanMaker E3 I used to own, it seems to work fine, but the software that came with it only allows you to save in .bmp or .tif formats. I would prefer to save immediately to a .jpg (JPEG) format, but I don't know of any freeware that does this. (I do have other software that allows you to open a .bmp file and export it to a .jpg format, but I prefer to do this more directly and easily from the scanning software).

If the Artec comes with TWAIN drivers (assuming you're on the Windows platform), you could scan directly into an imaging application that supports JPEG output, then to disk from there. I don't know of any * truly* generic scanning software, particularly as shareware or freeware: The problem is that scanner control is so dependent on the specific hardware.

Well do the software. If your scanner has Twain driver is not a problem, use Visual Basic 5 and WANG Ocx (all Wang stuff is in the Windows directory since the first release of Win95 i believe). The Active control let you save in different formats including Jpeg. You can also chose compression ratio for image quality/size. I dont know if it possible to make a little application that works with any Twain scanner, if i have time i can look for it and give you a better answer or even something more... bye.
