How does the Microtex Scanmaker 4 compare to other scanners in its price range?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am looking for a flat bad scanner that is (a) reasonably priced; and (b) that will give me the best possible transparency scans. 'Reasonably priced' means to me under $700. I need to do both 35mm and 2 1/4 transparencies. I've heard great things about the Microtek Scanmaker 4.(I've even heard that it can run with the Nikon Coolscan), but I want to know if anyone out there has experince with it. Any information would be appreciated.

I have test Agfa Duoscan scanner for trasparecy scans, someone told me that the hardware is manufactured by Microtek, so they are very similar. I test the one with 600x1200 dpi (like Scanmaker 4) the one with 1000x2000 dpi (Scanmaker 5) and i saw the new Agfa 2500x2500 dpi . The 600 dpi gives nice images but not quality. The 1000 dpi gives better quality on 35mm and good images on 4x5" transparency. The 2500 will be a "killer" product against slide scanners. (2500 dpi is only on a little area and is achieve using a zoom objective i think. I was very trouble comparing results between transparency (poor) and reflective scans (really great) and i decide not to buy such a scanner since they are expensive comparing their performances on transparency.
