Medium Format Film Scanner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi, I am looking for a medium format film scanner. (6X7) My budget is around $3,000. I've only been able to find detailed reviews on 35 mm scanners. Any help most welcome...

Thanks

Howard

HI Howard

The only scanner I'm aware of that goes up to medium format is a scanner from MInolta it's called the Dimage it will handle everything from 35 mm to 6x9 film, I've seen the unit in action and I was very impressed the maximum scan you can get from the scanner is a 19 mb file which is fine for most usage.....I personally am using a Epson Flatbed with a transparency adapter and it is good enough for scans from 4x5 and 6x9 film when scanning 6x6 or 6x4.5 it is pushing the quality but will work....35 mm is lousy and is only used in a pinch.

I hope this info will help you question....ciao

Minolta actually has a whole family of "Dimage" scanners. The one you'd want would be the Dimage Scan Multi. We expect to be getting one in for review sometime in early January, so should have the review up by the end of that month. (Along with the other Minolta Dimage scanners, the "Dual" and "Speed") Other folks make 6x7-capable scanners (Nikon and Polaroid), but they're quite a bit more expensive than the Minolta unit. You could use a flatbed scanner, but until you get up pretty high in the price range, you won't find equivalent max density or resolution capability. Stay tuned, we'll try to get the Dimage Multi review up ASAP...
