working hour changes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I would like to know when the law was changed from 16 hour days to the present hours a person can work without rest. I worked for the old GM&O for a while until 1964. The law was changed some time after that.

Public Law 91-169 amending the original hours of service legislation of 1907 was authorized by Congress on December 26, 1969. The maximum hours of service went from 16 to 14 on December 26, 1970; and the maximum hours of service went from 14 to 12 on December 26, 1972. It remains at 12 hours today.
