My Letter to the FDIC re: Know Your Customer (slightly off-topic)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

oops....server burped...sorry...

Just thought I would post for general info, the email I sent to the FDIC about their proposed Know Your Customer policy:

To Whom it May Concern,

The proposal to institute the KYC (Know Your Customer) policy is way out of line. This is a blatant invasion of my (and other American citizens) privacy.

What I put into and take out of my own bank account is nobody's business; not even the government's.

This policy would be a direct infringement into my right to privacy.

It has been stated that the KYC policy is intended to help reduce and track and eliminate drug-trafficking money laundering. It is fairly obvious to any semi-intelligent person that the druglords are not putting their "dirty money" into banks in the U.S. anyway. This is a poor excuse for instituting such an imposing policy. I am of the mind that there can be *no* valid reason for such a policy. Period.

The present regulation regarding amounts over $10K is more than adequate to cover any tracking of so-called "money laundering". Let's not go overboard here. Please!

What worries me about this whole proposal is that it could get blown way out of proportion. Who is to decide what's considered a "suspicious activity"? Where does it stop? This is America! Let's not do this - it infringes on privacy in a way that could be most dangerous!

Please reconsider. Please think carefully about what you are proposing here. This would set a very dangerous precedent should it be implemented.

Sincerely, Bobbi

Great letter. Just the right balance, just the right level of outrage and frustration. Great!!!

One minor brickbat::: Hitting submit more than once can tend to confuse those of us who are easily confused, like me, Deedah, elderly folks like Hardliner and MVI {by at LEAST a year and a half on me ;-)} and folks like that.

DEEDAH can you hum that song so I can pick up the words ".......only just..........."

Chuck, Sorry 'bout that. I didn't think it went the first time. I goofed.

As for "elderly folks" LOL! Well, I think I am a member of that group. One more year and I am half a century young *gasp*!!!

Argh....how time flies....

Dear Feds,

You've been getting a lot of mail criticizing your proposed "Know Your Customer" regulation. Well, I want to let you know that I support it 100%. Don't let those little people push your organization around. You know what's best. After all, an honest man has nothing to hide, right ? Go for it, and I'll see you in the place where there is no darkness.

Your pal,

Big Brother

I meant, I sent it under my real EMAIL address, of course, not name.
