SR Baywindow X700 series cabooses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

Some time ago, maybe in the Diesel Era magazine some of you talked about, there was a special mention about the X700 series of baywindow cabooses. Can anybody refresh my memory as to what that was? Thanks.

Matt, the article you reference is in the May/June 1993 issue of Diesel Era by Warren Calloway. According to the article the 600-793 series of caboosees were rebuilt from X2900, X3200, X6900 series bay window cabooses. These are very similar to the new cabooses built by Gantt Manufaturing for Southern in 1969-1971. You can see the evidences of rebuilding vs. original if you look at photos carefully. Welded over windows and bolt heads are the obvious differences.
