Is it just me, or is anyone else having trouble getting to this forum today?

Yep - I said last week that this Forum will be toast as it gathers in size and the server(s) overload(s):)

-- Andy (andy_rowland@msn.com), December 10, 1998.

Had lots of trouble last two days. Posts take 20 minutes before "success." Almost always "Server Busy." Can the 'carrying load' be increased? Can somebody tell us exactly how many hits a day this Forum is getting? Obviously, awareness is increasing! Lurkers, go ahead, what are your thoughts?

It's not just you Dave. I've been having server busy errors on/off for about a week but the last few days have been tough.Sometimes I just copy my post into the buffer, or if it is a long one then into word since I may kill the browser... anyway, here goes... submit... first try...fingers crossed.....no good......wait.............................second try......

I have been lurking here several times a day since last spring. I have only posted a few times, but I feel like such a part of this group... You all have given me invaluable info and links to follow (filled four 3 ring binders) You all have become an important factor in our preparation... Just think how many of us Lurkers are are really out there!!! If we all started posting, it would be nearly impossible to move in here. I really have had to work at getting through in the last few days!

Hi David, Tonight was the first time I have ever had trouble getting these post to come up. I do know that awareness is building. I don't say to much about this to people but I'm begining to here more talk everyday Hi Leska, Yes I've been lurking here a long time. I feel that I know everyone personaly. I read these post everyday after work and have gleaned much good info from them. I love the humor that you folks dish out to one another. Thanks for what your doing and keep dry!!! Rocky H Lurker

yep, its been busy, but I wonder if it is the time of day/nite that we attempt to post? Usually heavy at nite.

-- consumer (private@aol.com), December 11, 1998.

I've had lots of trouble here, but also lots of trouble at some other sites also. I wonder if the Net is generally overloading, or just certain types of sites?

Most of the trouble is coming from a bit further down the line than the forum server. I don't have much if any trouble, but I live in the South. Internet access has been having more troubles in the West and NorthEast recently due to massive increases in traffic. If you want to try to see where the problem lies, use traceroute (tracert if you are using Win95, 98 or NT) to check the lines between you and the server. Format is like this on Win95 (run from C:\windows directory) and must be run from the MS-DOS prompt - strictly a dos command.

tracert www.greenspun.com

and should give you a listing of routes and time required for reply from each portion of the route. If you have a series of long waits - esp near the beginning - that is where you are having the problem. BTW - you have to have an active Internet connection to check the routes this way. Just checked mine - 22 hops to greenspun - about 30 seconds for the complete report.

I haven't even once ever gotten "busy server". Not once. Hmmmm. I am in the northeast. Wonder if it's geographically related? Yo Bobbi, whats up with that y2k quiz? There is nothing to click onto when you get there to take the quiz....Frustrating.

-- consumer (private@aol.com), December 11, 1998.

Well - that's the problem with y2K - it isn't here yet, so there's nothing to take a test about. 8<)

Re the Y2k Prep quizlet...I was just there. It works fine. You get there and see a little box with questions. You click on the one that is your choice and it brings up a pop-up window with the results in it. It's working fine. Don't know why you aren't seeing it. There have been 70 some responses so far. I just put it there for kicks sorta...to maybe get a pulse of what people are doin for preparation. It isn't any *official* thingee or anything! LOL Anyway, sorry it isn't working for you. :-( Bobbi http://www.buzzbyte.com/ Got beans? Got water?

Well, it's just a fun thing I put there to take a "pulse" so to speak. I just checked it and it is working fine. Dunno what gives on your end. You need to wait while the quizlet loads and if beseen.com (which is where it's actually located at) is busy or overloaded it may not load quickly. I just thought it would be interesting to see the percentages that are preparing for what contingency.

I am now a member of the "server is busy" crowd! LOL! First time today and I kept getting busy while trying to access the forum. argh.

"I've had lots of trouble here, but also lots of trouble at some other sites also."

I'm on the east coast, and the past 3 days I've had the server busy message only at night starting around 11. During those times I can't get through, I go lurk on other sites. No problems on GN's site, Y2Ktoday and several others. I think Yourdon's is more popular than others and for good reasons. But it depends also on the capacity of the servers.

Thanks for posting the hit result list, Mr. Sum1whoknos. Awareness is certainly growing. Intersting spike after the 60 Minutes show. Someone once mentioned keeping an eye on the increase in posting as an indice on awareness and how much longer we have. Would be nice if you could post that list once in a while.

-- Chris (catsy@pond.com), December 11, 1998.

Scratch that...it's 9 pm now the server busy messages started :(

I think I'll stop posting on the non-serious threads. I feel guilty for using up bandwith :(

In answer to my question...

Subject: Re: Server Busy Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 18:16:15 -0500 (EST) From: Philip Greenspun Reply-To: philg@mit.edu

We've been having trouble with our mail system lately. It has taken down some services.. We're hoping to fix it soon.

Probably the relational database management system that sits behind this site is in trouble. This causes threads to stack up waiting for the RDBMS. In this situation, the best thing we can do is ask people to try again in a few minutes.
