ONTARIO HYDRO IS YEAR 2000 READY!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ontario 2000 : One Thread

The Ontario Hydro quietly announced that they are now Year 2000 'ready' (not saying 'compliant') by the end of February/99! This is amazing news and quite spectacular considering a fair number of power utilities in the United States are only now mid-point in their remediation progress! All of us involved in 'Ontario 2000' are very grateful to the professionals at Ontario Hydro for their achievement. Thank you.

Probably that ice storm that gave everyone over there breakdown religion. They know big things can go wrong, and what a gigantic arse pain it is (for everyone) when they do. I always remember the article about the guy (at Quebec Hydro - I think?), who was in charge of rounding up spare parts scrambling for power poles (among 1,000 and one other things). He said it was challenging...

I bet. Imagine trying to do it without phones.

Has anyone else bothered to look over the Ontario Hydro Y2K site? I did and it strikes me when I read that from the last quarter 1997 to Aug 31, 1998 47% of the systems were made ready.( 1 Year ). The next 51.4% took from Aug 31 1998 to Dec 31, 1998.( 4 month ) The last 1.6% will be finished by end of February 1999.( 2 month ). The site says ready and tested. Total amount of systems are 1879. What kind of test? Program, Cluster, End to End, Code Redemption or Windowing? What about Embedded Systems? Aren't there any in Ontario Hydro? When directly aproached for y2k compliance from a Company there was no word about compliance in the answer. The letter was from the CEO of the local Generating plant ( one of Ontario Hydros) which has a seperate grid to this industial area. It stated that there was a personal guarantee from this CEO that there will be power in 2000 for this area. Aparently the back up generator is OK. The other thing peculiar is that Ont Hydro only spent half the money allocated for the conversion. As I have seen, normally the price estimated is too low for the work to be done which results in an increase of redemption cost. I like to say that half the money spend means half the job done.
