River view, upstream

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

pentax 6x7, 75mm, tmax100. Early morning, misty, upstream view of a Georgia mountain river. Same river as an earlier posting of mine, but a more tranquil section of water. Thanks for any feedback.

Mike, you captured the soul of the river. Congratulations.

Mike

This is really a great image. It make me want to be there. And the light..wow. My only complaint is probably due to the scan. It looks to me like the shadows are not dark enough. I took the liberty of copying this into photoshop just to see. The darkest spot I could find came out to 83 percent compared to 100 percent black of the border. When I bumped up the levels to deepen the blacks it has the effect to my eyes of washing off a dirty window. I know its pointless to discuss this because of differences in operating systemes monitors, ect., but I imagine the image on the web doesn't do the print justice.

I look foward to seeing more,

I had lightened the original scan with curves control so the shadows wouldn't fill in. I guess I over did it. I've uploaded a darker version. Thanks

I really like this shot, great job. The creamy tonal range is nice. I is worth getting up early to stand in the river!

Though I'm not a fan of b&w, this is a nice picture.
I think including the white sky on the top is important in giving the view a sense of scale and openess. Without it, I feel the picture becomes very congested.
