Hey Ed. About the "Crystal Ball" article....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Did you really mean to imply that gary north and I are in the same boat and that the devil sends us messages?

I know the last part was just for effect but some of the Y2K'ers are a bit on the literal side.

Anyway, I take a lot of heat in c.s.y2k for being too optimistic.

Cory,

No, I did not mean to suggest that you and Gary North are Siamese twins separated at birth. You do both express pessimistic attitudes about Y2K, but the similarity pretty much ends there. You're a geek, he's not; he's a historian, you're not. Etc.

And no, I don't really think the devil is whispering in your ears. I got carried away and allowed myself a little poetic license.

Lighten up .. go have some fun in downtown Washington and tell us all about it in WR #105 ...

Cheers, Ed

what? you mean the devil *hasn't* been sending you messages? sheesh...I knew those WRPs were a scam...

There's one now. I'm always glad to meet a reader. No, no secret messages from the "bringer of light".

Vignette:

Cory, center, sitting on a stool, depressed.

Enter Luc. stage left.

Cory, alarmed, starts to his feet. "What...!"

Luc.: "Can you keep a secret?"

Cory, shaky voice: "Ah, yes -- sure -- I can."

Luc.: "So can I." Exits right.

Cory sits down again, puts head in hands, sobs.

I keep telling people Cory is a little on the optimistic side

Heck, just shy of a Pollyanna compared to the likes of Gary North, Paul Milne and Infomagic : )

That's exactly what makes what he writes so darn scary!!!

I have just looked at Ed's articles on Ethics and the Making a Y2K Killing article. When one wades through the soul searching (which is really a good wade, as it gives you some insight into where he is truly coming from spiritually (Di I stole your thunder sorry)) you get to the somewhat hidden meaning. He has become very pesimistic, and I would venture to guess he isn't including the 3 day option in any of his talks.

Ed, Appologies if I'm puttin' words in which don't belong. This is just how those two essays read.

Chuck

Between you and Cory, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmes (NOT!)

I just read Ed's article "Y2K for Fun and Profit". The part in it about the agenda of different people discussing Y2K is priceless.

ROFLMAO!

Ed is talking about us, and it's so true...

Ref Yourdon's Y2K for Fun and Profit.

Bowing and chanting ala Wayne and Garth, "We're not worthy, We're not worthy, We're not worthy!"

ROFLMAO!

Tom, Vignette: Cory, sitting on a stool, depressed, sobbing in hands.

Enter Michael stage right. Cory, stunned, starts to his feet. "What...!"

Michael: "Can you tell a secret?"

Cory, shaky, awed voice: "Ah, yes -- sure -- I can." Michael: "You have more help than you know. It all hinges on the decisions the rest of you make." Exits left, grinning, Sword of Truth in hand, to have a little chat with Luc.

Cory sits down again, looks at keyboard typing hands, crys, I can make a difference!

"It all hinges on the decisions the rest of you make."

I know. They're always saying that. Quite right, too.

(Decisions, decisions.... )

In Buddhism Without Beliefs, by Stephen Batchelor, the Buddha is quoted (in translation from Kalama Sutra):

Do not be satisfied with hearsay or with tradition or with legendary lore or with what has come down in scriptures or with conjectures or with logical inference or with weighing evidence or with liking for a view after pondering over it or with someone else's ability or with the thought "The monk is our teacher." When you know in yourselves: "These things are wholesome, blameless, commended by the wise, and being adopted and put into effect they lead to welfare and happiness," then you should practice and abide in them....

So there.

Cory,

Just remember. People are just a reflection of how we perceive ourselves. What Ed sees in you and Paul is how he sees a part of himself.

By the way Ed, I'm shocked to learn that you are not Gandhi. I always thought you were. At least you're my knight in shining armour. Keep slaying those Y2K dragons! You too Cory!

Pessimistic? Whoa, I'm still in Dee Cee aka "ground-zero". My assessment for the last year has been an "Edwards 4" which is somewhere between a deathmarch (tm) Ed Yourdon, and the collapse of cvilization.

I've put a lot of thought into the risks and am mostly concerned about the consequences of the IT failures. These will happen. I am struggling to understand the implications to society.

It was funny, unfortunately some readers are very literal and you have to be careful with certain images.

WRP 105 *might* be all Infomagic. Info isn't going to write the entire WRP. BarbKnox will be writing an article in support of Infomagic's position.
