Is this a fair analogy?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

This is not really a question... just an analogy that hit me and I want to share it with someone. Forgive me if I am stepping outside the bounds of this forum.

The Titanic is often used as a y2k analogy. I think it needs to be modified somewhat to fit the y2k situation.

The Titanic is on the "ways" under construction with a launch date that is fixed and can not be negotiated. The ship is loaded with passengers who are being told the hull is not completed and therefore not water tight, but don't worry... if we don't get all the plate welded to the frames by launch date... we'll complete the job at sea.

The analogy fails at this point because if y2k were a ship all the passengers could merely get off before she launched with gaping holes in her hull. In the case of the USS Y2K we are all locked in our cabins.

Mike,

Your analogy is similar to a write up I saw the other day in Peter DeJager's website. Here it is: http://www.year2000.com/y2kcurrent1.html

It's called Titan.

Mike, we may be stuck with an unfinished Titanic, but there's nothing that says we can't prepare individually and have an equipped lifeboat with us in our cabins, ready to launch if necessary....

If you can't get off the ship, the next best thing is to make what arrangements you can so you don't go down with the ship if it flounders or sinks. There are no guarantees preparedness will cover all eventualities, but it sure beats trying to swim for it!
