My name is Valerie Tanner. My 3 1/2 year old daughter and I moved to Duluth one year ago from the Cass Lake/Walker area. I recieved my teaching degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. On the last day of my student teaching I was offered a job at the Bugonaygeshig School on the Leech Lake Reservation. This is a tribal school with a population of 500 students, k-12. I taught in the EBD program here, both at the high school level and the elementary level. After this I worked at the Cass Lake-Bena Elementary School. I began teaching here in the EBD program also but after a few more years a moved into the regular education classrooms and taught 5th grade.

Now I work for the Department of Children, Families, and Learning in the division of Indian Education. I enjoy working in this area. Part of my job responsibilities are working with the Indian Home School Liaisons, working with parent committees, developing culturally relevant curriculum, and teacher training. I work with all schools in Minnesota who have identified 10 or more American Indian students in their school district.

My favorite pasttime is hearing my daughter, Janica, laugh. But if I do get a few rare moments to myself, I enjoy piano playing, sewing, and canoeing.
