alternate power generation

This is less a question than it is a suggestion for those seeking a reliable backup power generation system. Two suggestions: Buy a propane-powered generator, and buy a welding rig... not a stand-alone generator. The welding rig is, in essence, a generator, and is much less expensive than a generator. An 8,500-watt generator (if you can find one) costs about $5,000. An 8,500-watt welding rig costs about $3,200. The reason for the price disparity is simple: supply and demand. Generators are much more in demand than welding units, thus they cost more. As for the fuel, propane will store much longer than gasoline or diesel, and it burns much cleaner... thus prolonging engine life. Propane conversion kits are available for those owning or buying a conventionally fueled generator.

Harbor Freight tools (1-800-423-2567) sells a 9500 watt "industrial strength" gen (item #05764-8ABH) for $1599 w/free shipping. However, I like the propane conversion idea.
