Is my cat happy alone?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My Maine Coon cat is very loving and is always purring - particularly in the morning when he wakes me up. I am worried he may be leading a lonely life however. He lives alone with me in an apartment in the inner city so there is no chance I can let him outside. He sleeps an awful lot, and stares out the window a lot. Should I think about getting a pal for him?

Of course you wouldn't let him outside in the city - too many dangers. If you're working during the day, he may be lonely and a companion might be a good idea. I would suggest a kitten, so there won't be territorial disputes. If you get a kitten from the local animal shelter, be sure its been tested for FeLV & FIV, and had all its vaccinations before you bring it home.

Sleeping a lot is perfectly normal for a cat, but the staring out of the window a lot may be telling you that he's hungry for more stimulation.

Hope this helps!

Purrs, Trish
