Y2K on Art Bell's show, November 17

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

From the Art Bell show of November 17 with guest Jim Phillips

Art was reading from a fax hed received from "a veterinarian named Pete".

"I have a friend who makes and sells survival tapes. He lives 45 miles from Boise.Their community had a meeting about Y2K with various people including local power officials there. And he told me that this official told them they would probably be without power for three months. He told me about a Border Patrol agent who bought the tapes and told him that if the power goes out at the border in San Diego, the Patrol would probably abandon the border as there was nothing they could do about a mass of aliens crossing. In addition he had an Air Force general buying the tapes who, when asked about the military and Y2K, said China has the largest standing army in the world. Their equipment is antiquated and would be unaffected by Y2K. They would probably use the opportunity to take Taiwan and other areas in which they were interested. North Korea would invade the south. The US military would be unable to do anything about this since 40% of our equipment, sattelites and so forth, would be unavailable. The Japanese would be unable to do anything about any of this either, no military there. The only option would be nuclear. We would use that option, wouldnt we?"

(to Jim): Now, thats pretty black stuff you consider any of that possible?

Jim: Uh, its possible, yes. You could take a look at any of the scenarios and they all could be possible. And, uh, but what do we do about it? What can we do about it now?

Art: Well.. you.. you know, your approach is a laudible approach, to become more spiritual, to have the right kind of atttitude about whats coming, to acquire knowledge about it and to then finally, yes, acquire the material things that youre going to need, clothing, food, water, light, whatever you can manage to muster to physically make it easier on you. All of that makes sense. The only place where I think that you and I disagree, is about the possibility of people getting the right attitude and being nice, spiritual beings during frankly, Im going to bluntly honest with you Jim, and I think that if the power went out for three weeks, there would be complete anarchy Do you argue with that?

Jim: Uh I must say thats possible. Now if it went out today, maybe thats true. But, I believe that we need to be involved and I think part of the message that youre carrying and what a lot of other people are saying is, that we face some very serious things, and my question is this, what are we going to do about it. Are we just going to say, well I dont know, this looks pretty bad, theres nothing much I can do or we can say what I need to do is dig a hole and just take care of myself, or maybe we take the approach that says yes I do need to take care of myself but one of the most powerful things you can do in helping yourself to be prepared and be okay is to help people around you. By helping, I dont mean that you buy things for them and give it to them, but you help to motivate, inspire and teach and instruct all those who can listen. Will everybody listen? No, Im not gonna tell you that I think everybodys going to listen because Ive seen some people that are not. But there are people who are sitting on the fence if you will, they really havent made up their mind, theyre not quite sure if this thing is real or not. And if we can help them understand this is real, could be very serious, now, get going, lets get busy, then we can reduce the impact of Y2K.

At least some of "them" are getting it.

You know, that's the real problem here. The "X" factor. Will the chinese see this as a prime opportunity to "take over the world" (so to speak?) If I were China, I would. Will Korea launch and the Mid-east go nutz...? I think they will. (What have they got to lose?)

If all we had to worry about (I can't believe I'm saying *if all*) was sporadic, dirty power, food shortages and no communications for a few months, we might be able to get through it. IF that was *all* we had to worry about. But it's not. You have to figure in the "X" factor and that is: How will people/nations react to this disastor (opportunity)?

Sometimes I feel as if Lex Luthur is alive and well, scheming up his next diabolical plan to rule the world...and Y2K is *the* perfect opportunity for any half-insane ruler to have his way.

No?

Okum, I think you're absolutely right!

From Max; Jim Phillips said "The US military would be unable to do anything about this since 40% of our equipment, sattelites and so forth, would be unavailable."

I've had some real deep fears about the DMZ and y2k and all our people standing guard. I wish we could get them out of there NOW.

China is a whole other can of worms.

Okum I think is dead right (pun intended) on this one.

North Korea in particular is just waiting, their people are literally starving to death now, I think something's gotta give.

The mid-east as always is just waiting to blow - the Israeli Army have said they have removed themselves from the civilian power grid and infrastructure due to y2k concerns - I don't buy that, don't see how they could do that totally and so quickly. And no military yet is 100% compliant. Wouldn't be surprised to see them launch pre-emptive strikes if things are as bad as I think with their y2k weapons preparedness. To their mindset, get the first punch in if it's gonna go down anyways...

Then there are all those missing suitcase nukes.

Taiwan.

India/Pakistan.

I think I said before I don't want to even think about the weapons/nuclear scenario - the stage really is set for catastrophe in that regard.

All you can do is get on with your own preparations and put it to the back of your mind I guess.

Just finished reading "on The Beach" by Neville Shute - check it out.

Cheers, Andy
