Rose Bowl Parade 1-1-2000

Planning on spending 1-1-2000 at the Rose Bowl Parade? According to the Pasadena Weekly, everything is rosy.

Unfortunately, it's not on-line. Article is entitled 'Life's a Glitch', in the 11-11-1998 edition.

To summarize - how do they know things will be fine? Everyone they asked said that their projects were just fine. The school district has replaced their old mainframe and is about to start testing replacement software. The local hospital is one of the 25% in the nation with a Y2K plan, and found only 3% of 6000 biomedical devices that had a problem [did not say if that counted bedpans] The City of Pasadena has just appointed a Y2K specialist, and she is about to begin an assessment, starting with health and safety. [Yes - just starting] Luckily, the police department has been working on the problem for the last two years, and Chief Melekian is 'cautiously' predicting that his cop computers will be running on New Years Day 2000 while more than 1 million people party in Pasadena. "City helicopters most likely will patrol above Pasadena late New Years Eve and into New Years Day. Melekian said the computers on board the city's helicopters should be in proper working order. 'We're very confident that our internal programs and communications will work,' he said. 'We are very concerned about our vehicles. We're getting mixed information on what impact they will suffer. It has been suggested it's possible we will need to make sure all our vehicles are running at midnight.'"

Humm. Time to take a look at the SCE Southern California Edison Company's SEC 10-Q filing.

Wonder if the floats will be Y2K compliant?

Been to the parade twice in person. Great fun. Knowing that group, I suspect they'll have a parade even if the lights are off and the TV cameras don't work. It's part of their "spirit."

Why's the chief cop worried about vehicles running?

Thought that got resolved relatively favorably in here over the past 3 months. Who's he listening to, and what are they telling him?

Nothing about water, sewer, natural gas, other services City payroll, taxes, lights, power, telephones, gas pumps, hotels, fire dept.......bugular alarms......city government is okay (?), what about county and state?

This is why our school band won't be accepting any "out-of-city" trips for next year's holiday season. Can you imagine trying to take care of 300-400 teenagers downtown in a out-of-state city for ??? days trying to get them back home to OK or TX or OH?
