U.S. banks to spend $4 billion to avert bug

U.S. banks plan to spend at least $3.92 billion to avert the year 2000 problem, with many of the biggest spending more than expected to fix computers to recognize dates after Dec. 31, 1999. Because of their responsibility for the flow of money throughout the economy, the government has required banks to reveal the status of year 2000 efforts one year before the event.

From Bloomberg News and the Washington Post.

Diane, I am really bummed. Our bank has been working on this quite awhile..( I bug them all the time about this...no pun intended:>) They have been telling us we would be compliant by Jan 99...thats in just a few days!!! I thought at least they are on top of things..( we even had a meeting with a big guy on their reponses should y2k be bad) anyway, went to bank today to make deposit...just chatting and asked casually ( if you can call it that:>) if they were all ready with their new systems for next week...guess what..despite all the money they are spending they still won't be ready when they said. Said they won't be ready til sept of 99!!!! I almost yelled...why so long? That doesn't leave you any time for glitches!! Yikes..I am really upset by this. They had been so dead adament that all systems would be up and running by jan 99 and they had no problems since they were replacing all the systems...seems now the story goes they aren't even getting "ALL" new systems either. I'm going out to buy some more rice and beans. Catch ya later.

Terrific News D. It's gonna be a 2! Time to get back to worrying about aliens.

The banks will not be ready by December 31, 1998 (i.e., in 4 days); they will not be ready in Jan 1999; they will not be ready, period. Nor will the electric utilities, nor will the telecommunications services, nor will anyone else of any value.

We have been playing this game for months and months. When will we simply admit it: Y2K cannot be fixed.

Suppose that's a fact, they won't be 100% ready. How do you go from there to having your money vaporize? It's a 2. Get Over It
