"America 1900"

Tonight PBS will air a show for the American Experience called "America 1900." It could be interesting to gain some insite into how people lived back then.

Typical PBS documentary, elegant but spotty. I always enjoy them. Three things that struck me:

The 20th century began with the rise of "people power" against the industrialists as the mineworkers union asserted its power. The century ends as industrialists make an end-run around the workers, taking a signifigant portion of production offshore and exploiting the new non-union workforce, much as it did in 1900.

The proliferation of reliable, affordable electrical power ushered in the new century. The question of its reliability haunts the century's end.

The arrival of the 20th Century was celebrated on 1-01-01. Of course, everybody back then knew that 1900 was the last year of the 19th Century.
