Is Lexar's Compact Flash really faster?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Has anyone tested out Lexar's new "4x" compact flash cards? Is there a real significant speed difference? The two 24 meg cards for $179 is still a great deal... it would be a sure buy if it works half as fast as advertised.

Yep, they're faster. I don't know exactly how much faster but I do know that Lexar has some patented technology that enables them to have much better write performance when the flash card is realatively full (>70% of capacity). As far as I know the speed advantage is only on write cycles. You won't see a significant advantage when the flash card is less than half full.

No they're not faster, at least not faster than smaller cards. Maybe they're faster than other big cards, haven't seen that tested yet though. Here is an actual stop watch test someone did, that is the source for my info. Check it out yourself: http://www.quiknet.com/~frcn/FramCam.html

Their Pro line of compact flash cards are signifigantly faster than the competitors. I'm getting ready to orcder 2 more simply so that while one is in the proccess of being downloaded to a digital wallet I don't have to keep stopping my chooting while I wait for pictures to be stored.
