existing Southern roundhouses

Can anyone tell me if any other Southern Railway roundhouses exist besides Spencer? I've heard a shell of the building might still exist at Alexandria, VA..

Can anyone provide old and recent photos, plus some history if it or others do still exist?

Bob,

The roundhouse at Asheville, NC is still intact and in use by NS, for how long I do not know. Of course, it has undergone many alterations, for instance the window openings have long since been brocked in. There are plenty of pictures of it and SHRA archives even has a photocopy set plans you can buy. I think the roundhouse at Chattanooga, TN is still in use also, but I am not certain.

The old Roundhouse in Alexandria was torn down recently, for a long time it was storage for a brick company. I am looking for any photo's of Monroe Va, with the roundhouse and other buildings. I have some photos I could share with you, just have to scan them. drop me an email.

About half the roundhouse at Knoxville (John Sevier)still exists and the last time I looked it was being used for switcher maintenance.

I recently was told that the tiny part of the roundhouse at Charlotte, still in existance, has been slated for demolition. God rest ye well fair lady.

The roundhouse in Louisville, KY is still standing and in use but it is the former Kentucky and Indiana Terminal Railroad facility.

Unless it has recently been demolished, the North Avenue roundhouse in Atlanta is still intact. For many years it has been part of a warehouse complex built on part of the old North Avenue Yard.

The Southern roundhouse and several big shop buildings in Princeton, Indiana were still standing as of June of last year. They are on the fenced-in property of Mid-States Rubber Products.

Bob,

Three stalls of the roundhouse at Pegram Shops in Atlanta still exist. They had been used as a locker room and the NS Locomotive Maintenaince Training Center before the shops were closed in August of 1999.

In Atlanta both the Peagram and North Avenue roundhouses exist. We are currently restoring the NorthAvenue Roundhouse and redeveloping the warehouses that surrounded it. The Peagram yard has been closed and Norfolk Southern is trying to determine what to do with it. Anyine interested call me at 404-558-4013.

The roundhouse in Company Shops, aka Burlington, N. C. is still standing. It is being restored and I think will be used as the train station.

There is a SR roundhouse in Greensboro, NC. Its deteriorating but still in pretty good shape. Two backshops are still present. If you're ever in Greensboro its a great sight to check out. Its currently abandoned and easily accessible. Its on Spring Garden St. (3303 or 3305 is the street address).

What is the best way to get to the North Avenue roundhouse in Atlanta? It is the one railroad attraction in the area that has eluded me. Is it gated or anything? I know it's not in the best area but are the owners touchy about security/trespassing?

No roundhouses survive in Chattanooga. The Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway roundhouse at Craven's Yard was the last to be removed. I think that was sometime in the 1970s. Both Southern Railway roundhouses were gone sometime before then. One was being used as a warehouse and caught fire. I believe that the other one was demolished by the railroad.

The roudhouse of the former Findley Yard in Birmingham still stands, being used as a wharehouse. The Backshops also still exist nearby and are still in use by some steel company.
