Power generation in 1955

Would someone please explain the following: What is the difference between the way in which electricity is generated today and the way in which it was generated in 1955, before computers? What are the main reasons we could not revert to 1955 methods......or could we in some areas?

Okay, I'll bite.

1. Limited Personnel 2. Training of personnel to run a manual grid 3. Telecommunication and other communication problems 4. Contingency plans and procedures necessary not in place 5. The old guys who used to do this are retired or dead and buried (no offence Dick Mills) 6. More sensitive electronic equipment these days that are very sensitive to voltage/current fluctions (not like in 1955 when you were just lighting bulbs and turning motors) 7. Deregulation of the power grid 8. Rap "music" is hard on the grid.
