Alliant Energy Tells Customers Buying Generaters May Be A Good Idea!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

The CEO of Alliant Energy,Erroll B. Davis Jr. advises customers that Alliant may not be ready for Y2K. He also suggests that they research Y2K issues and that they draw thier own conclusions. He even suggests that they read "Time Bomb 2000",by Ed Yourdan and other so-called gloom and doom books and articles. I consider this a watershed event as it is the first utility that I'm aware of that is being straight with the public. He hints that it may also be a very good idea for customers to buy thier own generators. For more info go to http://www.alliant-energy.com/alliant/y2k/brochure/printable.htm

I would agree that Alliant is very upfront about the impact of y2k and the utility industry. It will be very interesting to read there latest 10-Q report. I called the company headquarters this week and someone finally connected me the person responsible for the report. He stated that the 10-Q report deadline is today (11/13/98). This should be very interesting.

Interesting that in this section of their page doesn't mention power as an essential service...

"What can I do to avoid Year 2000 problems?

Consider how you would face the loss of essential services like transportation, communication or banking."

Overall though a very interesting page and very up-front. Alliant should be commended.

I don't know about all of you, but I am following the advice and buying a portable generator. Living in Wisconsin, a power outage in december will mean some very cold days. I will run the generator just enough for portable heaters and food prep. A locked area outside will keep food frozen. One other thought for those of you who do intend on using a generator is gas. With no power, the pumps will not be operating, and you had better have some gas stored. Gas is good for about 30 days, so don't plan too far ahead or your gen. will be worthless to you. Also, lock it up tight outside, keep it guarded. I don't ever think I would shoot anyone, but if my familys life is in jepordy... Just a thought. I hope God helps us through this.
