I want to initiate a contract for an "A" grade in Cohort III for the first term of the 1998-1999 year. Iwill:submit two special projects for the first term by January 27, 1999; these projects will be reading two texts pertaining to a professional growth area, writing and posting a summary, and sharing this information with my cohort colleagues. The first book I have chosen is Errors and Expectations by Mina P. Shaughnessy. The focus in this book is on teaching basic writing skills to students who "were not by traditional standards ready for college." I teach regular, daytime English classes to grade 10-12 students; one of these classes is Comp 1120: College Writing, for which my students recieve UMD college credit. I also work with the Alternitive Learning Program (night school) students who are working on learning English credits for a H.S. diploma or are studying for the GED test. I feel therefore, my first choice is very appropriate and will provide additional professional insights. I have not yet selected another text, but I will do so soon. In addition I will: * attend and actively participate in each class session. * facilitate a class session at least once in the academic year (set for Feb. 10 with Christine Osthus). * write quality assignments and submit on the requested deadline. * participate in student critiques providing feedback. * Integrate what I learn in class into my work setting; discuss new ideas with my colleagues to gain additional perspective and insights. * complete required readings by deadline. * learn basic computing skills.

My second book review will be on the book HOW TO HANDLE THE PAPER LOAD. This topic is one I'm immensely interested in because I don't want to experience burn-out from all the papers I correct; there must be things I can do - organize more, use different strategies, etc.

I want to initiate a contract for an "A" grade in Cohort III for the second term of the 1998-1999 year. I will: submit two special projects; these projects will be reading two texts pertaining to a professional growth area, writing a summary, and sharing this information with my cohort colleagues. The first book I have chosen is PORTFOLIOS IN THE WRITING CLASSROOM by Kathleen Blake Yancey. I chose this book because I want to implement portfolios into my grade 10 classroom next year and I need all the information I can get. This book looks like a good place to start. Also my last book read for Term 1 had to do with reducing the paper load of teachers, but did not have much information on portfolios so I want to continue my investigation of ways to reduce a teacher's paper load. I have not yet chosen the second book. In addition I will: *attend and actively participate in each class session, *facilitate a class session at least once in the academic year (completed 2/10/99 with Christine Osthus), *write quality assignments and submit on the requested deadline, *participate in student critiques providing feedback, *integrate what I learn in class into my work setting, *discuss new ideas with my colleagues to gain additional perspectives and insights, *complete required readings by deadline, and *learn basic computing skills.
