UMAX makes nice scanners and the 1220 is representative (I have an older S-12, myself). For slide/negative scanning, the difference in resolution and image quality between a flatbed and a dedicated film scanner is incredible, though. For a film scanner on a budget, check our reviews of the Olympus ES-10 and HP PhotoSmart Scanner. The Olympus is cross-platform, while the HP works only on the PC. Either one will give you dramatically better results on transparencies than would an adapter on your 1220. Our sponsors Cyberian Outpost and State Street Direct both sell the Olympus, I don't know if either carry the HP. List on the Olympus I think is $349 these days, the HP $299 after a $100 mail-in rebate coupon.

Good Luck!
