Digital Camera Market Share/Unit Sales?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi, I'm a student at Stanford doing a class project on the digital camera market, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on where I could find information on the different manufacturers' market share, or how many units of each product they're selling. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks, -- Pearl

Phil's suggeston of PMA was a good one - you'll find a phone number on their site. If you call it, you should be able to get some statistics over the phone. They generally don't track by mfr though, but more by category. Here's some numbers for last July, from a commercial data outfit (no freebies from them) called PC Data (703-435-1025), by way of The Future Image Report (www.futureimage.com):

Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 - 19.25% units, 20.45% dollars Sony Mavica MVC-FD71 - 18.78% units, 21.52% dollars Kodak DC260 - 6.38% units, 10.22% dollars Sony Mavica MVC-FD5 5.68% units, 4.26% dollars Olympus D-600L - 3.94% units, 6.38% dollars Olympus D-320L - 3.35% units, 2.70% dollars Nikon Coolpix 900 - 2.7% units, 3.78% dollars Kodak DC210 - 2.57% units, 2.87% dollars Kodak DC120 - 2.1% units, 2.06% dollars Olympus D-500L - 2.09% units, 2.19% dollars

FWIW, I don't entirely believe these numbers: Based on traffic on this site, the Nikon CP900 for instance was doing much better in July than indicated. OTOH, our readership isn't an exact cross-section of the buying market... Good Luck

Pearl,

I'd try getting ahold of PMA, the Photo Marketing Association. They are located at www.photomarketing.com or try DIMA at www.digitalimager.com. Good luck.
