Updating Situation on Power Utilities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

We could use a site here where we could all supply information on the status of power utilities in each state. From within each state several people could inform all of us what information they are getting. What is your source? Why do you think it is not just PR? We might get a clearer picture of where the nation is, where a particular state is, helping us to evaluate what is misinformation and lack of information. Has Colorado finished work on PLC's? Has Mississippi done any testing? I imagine--as we move through 1999-- we will get increasingly "good reports" (from utilities). If Mr. Cowles sets up a state by state watch, we might be in a better position to evaluate whether we have, in fact, moved from a "grave" situation to a "serious" one. In a glance someone can listen to a dozen people speaking about a utility in their state (where they believe its progress is) or look at the nation as a whole.

Geoff,

From what I've seen, the site you are suggesting is the one you're looking at right now. Check out the contributions that have been posted regarding several power companies and their 10Q filings, the input from people involved in the remediation, and from those who actually generate the power. In the meantime (and I say this to everyone who asks me about preparing for y2k problems) consider this. The power companies KNOW that someone somewhere will experience "abnormal operations" as a result of y2k. They don't know how many someones will have them and they don't know how severe or widespread those problems might be. Most are "cautiously optimistic" about their ability to handle failures but the caution is there because THEY DON'T KNOW what kinds of problems will show themselves. In the face of that many unknown factors, we will not know whether our utilty is truly "y2k ready" until we start singing "Auld Lang Syne" on New Years Eve 2000 and notice whether the lights go out when we're finished. Prepare now!! Don't wait for some utility spokesman or government official to tell you that your local utility provider isn't ready for the millenial rollover. Once you're prepared, the truth about their y2k preparations will be less important. No matter how hard you dig you still won't have any more definite answers than you have now. Wish I could be more upbeat but I hope this helped

All Success Keith
