I have been looking into getting some chickens, and studying the advantages and disadvantages of the different breeds, only to be thoroughly confused as to what kind to get with a dual purpose. What about crosses between RI reds and orpingtons, or sussex? Would that give chickens with better characteristics? Help!

Barred Rocks are good. RI reds aren't as thrifty, but ar prettier.

Matt, scan down to the older threads. Under the "Uncategorized" messages, look for a thread called: "Has anyone considered Buff Orpington Chickens?" It is just about in the middle (a little lower) of all of the threads listed. You'll find some interesting comments.
