Will this guys generator plans really work?

This guy has a cool site with plans for a homemade generator. Is it worth spending time on it?

It will work. Is it worth it?

For $120.00, you get (after a lot of sweat and blood, and providing you're mechanically inclined) 800w of peak power out of used parts with an unknown lifetime. My guess is that it wouldn't last long under continuous duty requirements.

OTOH, you can buy a 5000W (6500W peak) brand spanking new Generec (not that I'm recommending Generac; just as an example) that will power just about everything you could want within reason for $499.00 at BJ's or Costco. So, which makes more sense, economically?

I'll let you do the math on this one.

I am constantly being asked should I purchase a coleman or a generac etc and why are they so cheap? The answer is you get what you pay for.... home appliances motors are very sensitive to voltage swings etc. The less expensive generators are not as well regulated, we have had countless people contact us that have purchased the cheaper units only to find their appliances wouldnt work or were ruined by the swings when they tried to use them for extended periods of time. Have you seen the shape of the waves on a coleman or a generac... :) you would understand then.

Mike, I agree. I was only using the Generac as an example. Regardless of the quality (or sound level), the 500 buck Generac has got to be a better investment in time and money than the 'home brew' generator described in the subject URL. As you say, you gets what you pays for.

Just as a side note, the euy2k.com website will be undergoing some extensive revisions in the next month. One of the first changes will be the addition of a 'resources' page that will provide links to various information sources, including those dealing with "off the grid" and "homepower".
