oh..it was taken with a Canon A2E, Tamron 100-300 lens @ 300, handheld, Kodak Royal Gold 200 Somewhere outside of St Louis

I like the way the green background tends to look at little soft and merged together and the monarch is sharp and the colors brightly contrast the background.‰

I prefer a tighter cropping, say the top 40 %.

I agree with both of the previous answers. Intentionally or not, the muted background colors and sharp, vivid butterfly are an excellent combination. It really calls attention to the critter.

I'd like to see a crop just above the largest leaf (roughly cropping off the bottom third) and also would like to see the in-focus blossom not quite touching the top of the frame.

It's a lovely picture.
