generator heads

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

I have been searching, without much luck, I might add, for a company that sells just the generator half of a portable generator. I am trying to keep costs as low as possible, and have several small gas engines sufficiently large enough to power up to a 10KW generator. I also have the know-how to bring the two units together and make it work. Anyone with info on this, please let me know.

Thanks

I have one (5 KW) on back-order from Princess Auto, an industrial supply store here in Canada. Grainger also sells them (www.grainger.com), although you need to be a "company" to buy stuff from them.

The 5 KW generator I am buying costs about $500 Canadian (about $325 USD). It wants an 8 HP engine to run it.

Sam's (Wal-Mart) sells a 5KW generator w/engine for about $500. Good Luck, Bill

Northern sells many type of generators. Their address online is http://www.northern-online.com. Not sure of the quality of the products but the prices are pretty good. God Bless

Farm supply stores like Central Tractor or Tractor Supply Co ( TSC ) sell Winco generators that are meant to be run off the PTO of a tractor....they are genrator units only....the smallest I think takes about 20 tractor HP.

Here's my vote for Northern. We have a store here locally and I've seen the generator part of the set sold alone, without the engine as you described. You just have to figure out what size (not KW, but physical crankshaft size) that you need. You'll also have to get your engine governed to run at either 1800 or 3600 rpm, depending on what the generator side requires. The sets I've seen have the AC outlets on the end, but some larger sets run wires to a panel.

Good luck

Bob
