What happened to Y2K Awareness Week?

Oct 16-23 was designated "Y2K Awareness Week". What happened? Not a word in the weekend edition of USA today. Nothing in the National network news. Nothing in US News & World Report. Just Clinton's urging full info sharing; SEC fines brokers for non-disclosure. Nightline (too late in many areas due to re-runs of "Coach" etc), which, upon reading the transcript said nothing except "you are on your own", when reading between the lines.

If there was any part of me that doubted whether Y2K would usher in a disaster it was removed by watching how un-magnificently our government accomplished its so called "Y2K Awareness Week". If the utter failure of this government proclaimed and scheduled event is any indication of how well Y2K is otherwise being handled then we are in a much more threatening predicament than even I had anticipated and I am no optimist.

I was so disappointed in the Nightline broadcast that I couldn't just sit back and do nothing. I am appalled at the lack of preparation of Forrest Sawyer (shall we call him Forrest Gump?). If he had read the Oversight Hearing report from Congressman Horn's committee or any other report on the state of the federal government he would have been able to call Koskinen on his "misleading of the American people". I called the White House and asked for the # for the President's Council. John Koskinen answered the phone himself and I told him how much of a disservice his misleading statements did for those of us who are trying to get some real effort out of our local government. I suggested a national press conference by VP Gore on the Y2k issue but it seems it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Mr. Koskinen did state y2k is going to be "like a wave of hurricanes hitting the country". He also expressed concern about the food supply and the lack of local preparedness around the nation. I recommend that everyone call the White House and ask to be transferred to the President's Council on Y2k office. Voice your opinion on the silence from the administration. Y2k - silence is deadly.
