TITANIC: ADVENTURE OUT OF TIME

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TitanicShack : One Thread

For anyone who saw the A&E show Beyond Titanic, you may have seen reference to a computer CD game developed by Cyberflex. This CD has two components, a game and a tour. In both cases you are able to walk through all decks, bridge, wireless room, smoking lounge, staterooms, dining room, boiler rooms and the grand staircase. You also run into fictitious crew and passengers who you can dialogue with. It is unbelievable and realistic. I recommend it highly to any Titanic entheusiast. A website is available at www.cyberflix.com.

I agree! I got the game quite a long tome ago, right in the first days of the movie's release, and it is unbelievable. Brian, have you gotten to the part when the ship sinks? I haven't stayed long enough to find out and I would like to know how it went. Also, I know I must be pounding you with questions, but when you start the game how do you get out of that apartment? I think a bomb hits you, but I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any help! To anyone thinking of getting it, GET IT! It's amazing, like I'm really there. The Grand Staircase is absolutely breathtaking! Have fun with it if you choose to buy it, and I strongly advise you to as soon as you can! You don't want to miss out on the fun before it's sold out. I'm taking forever getting to the piont so I'll stop now..... Have fun! Kelly :-)

Hey, I may have misread the previous posts, but it looked like someone had questions regarding this game and parts of it.

I bought the game a long time ago ( I absolutely love it) and have already completed it, straight through. There are numerous different endings, depending on which, and how many of the necessary items you end up with when the boat sinks (also, there is a different ending depending on whether you get off the ship in time (no matter how many of those items you have)

It's an absolutely wonderful game, because of all the various possible endings, and it is suspenseful enough to keep you on the edge of your seat and keep trying until you get the desired result (saving the free world...etc)

If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me, and I will do my best to answer them. I love the game so much that even though I've already won it, I still play for the different endings, and also to see the graphics and animated parts...and to go fencing, boxing, etc with the passengers ;)

I can probably answer any scenario questions, so feel free to ask, and also I wouldn't mind talking about how cool this game is with someone else who has already played it.

Cya!!

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 19, 1998.

Yep, this is the definitive game but you have to really be on your toes and watch the time carefully. The clock does not move much until the fatal iceberg strike but then it really boogies and you have no time to "look around". There are, I believe, seven different endings but even if you don't get to any of them, this is great stuff and the graphics are exceptional. Well worth the price!

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 21, 1998.

You say there are different endings. Is this a survival game? Are there different skill levels? For example, can you play as a first-class woman to start (easiest), then work your way up (down) to third-class man or stoker in the forward boiler room? How much does this game cost and what are the system requirements for best results (I have an old 133 Mhz Pentium with Windows 95)? Thanks in advance for any answers - this sounds like it might be more interesting than the movie....

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 21, 1998.

Hi Dalton:

Reading off the box, the requirements are: Windows 95/3.1, 486/66 or faster processor (Pentium recommended). 8 mb ram (16 mb recommended). Super VGA video card and color monitor. 100% Windows compatible sound card. Double speed or faster CD Rom drive.

In the game you are a "retired" agent and you have to accomplish certain tasks and retrieve certain items thus the different endings if you don't achieve all of your goals. Believe me, it ain't easy!

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 21, 1998.

Thanks, Peter. Sounds good and it looks like I meet the requirements. I'll check Best Buy or Circuit City for it. If it's reasonably priced ($20 - $30), I'll pick it up.

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 21, 1998.

Hello Again!

I just wanted to tell you that if you have the minimum system requirements, the game will run, but VERY slowly. I ran this on my old computer which was a Packard Bell with a 66 mhz processor and it worked but was tedious. On my present computer, a Gateway 200 mhz, it moves right along. Also, price-wise I couldn't tell you as this was a gift but I would guess in the 40-50 dollar range.

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 21, 1998.

I think most of the questions so far have been answered, but I'll say some stuff anyway. I believe the game is in the $40 range. You are a British Secret Servive agent who was on the Titanic in 1912, but did not go to meet your contact before the ship sank, and therefore, many things happened as a result of your failure--WW1; Russian Revolution; WW2...etc...pretty much, the Nazis come to power, as well as the Communists, etc etc.

At the beginning of the game, you are in the time April 14, 1942. You are the British Secret Service agent, in Britain during WW2, and you look around your apartment at stuff. After getting what you need in the apartment, a bomb goes off, transporting you back in time to April 14, 1912, and the narrarator tells you your mission, and what had gone wrong the first time. ("what if we could go back in time? What if I had met my contact?")

So basically, you go back in time to do what you didn't do the first time. Meet with your contact and try to accomplish everything that you were supposed to accomplish, before the ship sinks. Sorry, you can't prevent Titanic from sinking, but if you are successful in getting everything you need, you can prevent WW1, RR, WW2, etc.

However, even if you do get everything you need, if you don't get to a boat in time, (you have a pocket watch keeping time) you will sink with the ship.

Also, if you only get certain items you needed, in different combinations, the endings vary. For example, if you get what you needed to prevent the Nazis from rising to power (in this case Hitler becomes an artist) but you didn't get anything else, you didn't accomplish much, because the Communists just ended up taking over Europe and that is almost just as bad.

So basically you are a time traveller. This game works in 2 CDs so when you are playing the game for the most part in the beginning, time doesn't move until you accomplish certain tasks. So you have time to do whatever, and think about what to do next. BUT, once the ship hits the iceberg, you change CDs and time goes FAST...you have to keep an eye on it, while you try to get everything you need, so that you don't end up going down with the ship. Also, be careful what you say to people (you can dialogue with tons of characters) cos if you say the wrong thing, you are screwed.

Well! I'm sure you all know more than you wanted to by now, but I hope you all go out and get this game because it is definitely worth it. Have fun, and happy time traveling.

Hope this info helps!

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 21, 1998.

I just picked up this game at the (apparently aptly named) local Best Buy for $24.99 + tax. So far I've only taken the tour. And I've figured out how to mute that annoying oboe solo. One question - I've got a green forward arrow at some stateroom doors, but I knock and no one answers. Is there something I don't know? Can you only enter these rooms during the game? Oh - and those close-ups of the palm trees and wall sconces, as well as the steam from the electric bath, are REALLY helpful (sarcasm). I suppose they must play some part in the game?

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 21, 1998.

The game is really inexpensive now, I got it at Costco for $16 about 5 months ago, there were still copies there the last time I checked (this is Honolulu though...). If you go to the cyberflix website, you can download additional characters for the tour. I think the game comes loaded with 4 "tour guides" but the website has 8 additional guides. Pretty neat stuff!

-- Carrie (foo@bar.com), October 21, 1998.

Dagnammit! I just checked out the cyberflix web site and now I really want this game. I couldn't spot any way to contact them to ask for Australian distributors, I might try emailing the support department, that was the only email address I saw.

Anyway, wish me luck :-)

-- Emma (dilemma76@hotmail.com), October 21, 1998.

Hey, about the green arrows at doors. I haven't really done much with the tour, but I know that during the game, you can't go in some doors unless you have done something necessary to reach that point. Like sometimes, you have to have a certain object, while others, you just have to have enough information to have reason to go there. (this prevents you from just randomly going in places for no reason). Definitely start playing the game, it is great. Along with the animations, you will love it.

If you need help finding something, or knowing what to do or where to go, let me know.

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 21, 1998.

Wow. $16? In HONOLULU, where a two bedroom condo sells for 1/2 million dollars? I paid $25 for mine! I got raped! I'll have to shop around, buy a cheaper copy and return it to "Best Buy"....

BTW: Why do they have to package CD-ROM software in such huge boxes? I thought there might be a manual or something inside this game pack. And when I got software for my digital camera, the manual was on the CD and I had to print out all 90 pages on my printer - wasting paper, ink, and time. What a joke!

-- Dalton (bitch@moan.com), October 21, 1998.

I guess I know what I'll be asking Santa for this year! This game sounds awesome.

-- Courtney (greenlane@sprint.ca), October 21, 1998.

Well I'm glad SOMETHING is cheaper here in Honolulu -- we don't even qualify for those cheapy $9.99 pizzas (the fine print always says EXCEPT HAWAII AND ALASKA - why?). And don't even get me started on the gas prices. So maybe $25 at "Best Buy" is not so bad in the grand scheme of things.

BTW, if anyone wants to cheat, there is a walkthrough at gamepower.com - I can't vouch for it's accuracy because I haven't used it...yet!

-- Carrie (bitch@moan2.com), October 21, 1998.

...So I recover the book out of coal chute 4 in boiler room 3. Then "Vlad" shows up, takes the book and shoots me in the head. I knew I shouldn't have trusted that bastard! Should I have gone another way (other than up the adjacent stairs) with the book? Or was my mistake in talking to Vlad in the first place? Thanks in advance for any help, as I don't want to waste another hour only to get that result again!

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 22, 1998.

By the way: You really have to schmooze that officer guarding the wireless room! And, for God's sake, don't ask him if he wants a drink! It took awhile to recover from that!

I never did find Burn's (the photographer) wife after screwing up that conversation. Several returns to his cabin elicited that same question again and again (Did you find my wife?), but I forgot his description of her. Are his photos worth the effort?

So far this game is a blast. I would reccommend it to everyone! (For what that's worth.)

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 22, 1998.

It sounds like a blast! The comments here alone are a blast. I probably don't have the minimum IQ necessary to get to stage one though.

-- BobG (bob@bob.bob), October 22, 1998.

Dalton:

I haven't played the part with the book and Vlad for a while, so I'm going to go back over it tonight. Off the top of my head though, I believe that after getting it from Chute 4, you are to hide it in another chute, then go upstairs. (that's the only way to get out of there)

As far as the photographer, his pics are helpful in finding out a little about the germans, Zeitel...etc. It's most fun just developing them! After talking to the photographer, he'll tell you she is wearing a blue bonnet. When he goes back inside his room, turn to the right, go to the staircase and you will see her in that vicinity. Don't worry, the blue bonnet should jump right out at you. Once you see her, just go back to his room, and when he asks if you found her, say, yes she's in the staircase,(or something)(you'll know which sentence to choose) Then go in a develop the pics.

But I will go check on the book in chute 4 to make sure I gave you the right instructions for that.

Also, a good idea is to save the game at points like that before you do it again. For example, when you go to get the book, save the game. That way, if you do something wrong, you can just open the game up at that point and keep trying till you get it right. As you get further in the game, this will be critical if you want to be successful by trial and error.

Happy playing!

(I love these questions, and hearing all of you playing it for the first time!!!)

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 22, 1998.

BTW, I forgot about Officer Morrow. Find the binoculars, and you can just go up to him and ask him if he wants them. Once you give them to him, he'll let you in the wireless room and the bridge.

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 22, 1998.

Hey hey buddies. I have emailed Cyberflix asking them for Australian distributors and they gave me three names of companies in the States who sell their products. Anyway, I visited all their sites and NONE of them show the Titanic game in their product lists. I am getting most annoyed. I don't suppose any of you guys want to send a poor little Aussie hick one of these CD-ROM's as a Christmas present? ;-)

Just kidding, but I will be most annoyed if I can't track down a copy of this. I really want to get it now after hearing all these discussions.

-- Emma (dilemma76@hotmail.com), October 22, 1998.

Hello All:

Wow, you guys are really into this! A couple of points: I believe that Cyberflix sold the rights to the game and are no longer involved with it. When I bought my current computer. I tried to run the cds that I had and it was no go. I contacted Cyberflix and told them of my problem and they were very helpful. It seems the original cds were slightly eliptical and would not run properly on a higher speed cd-rom drive. They sent me two new cds at no charge and without asking for registration verification. That solved the problem and I was well satisfied. Shortly after that I read that they had sold the rights to the game. I'm glad I solved my problem before they did this. However, I cannot remember who has the rights now but I don't think you will get much from Cyberflix now as it is no longer their product. The great thing about this is that you can come up with these items that may seem really important and they turn out to be nothing and vice-versa. The binoculars are one of these items (sorry Josephine). Asking Morrow about his experiences and letting him "unload" on you will gain you admittance to the wireless room. Dalton is correct, do NOT ask him if he wants a drink! And Josephine, good point about saving the game frequently. It will save you many headaches because there is no possible way you will get through this in one sitting (unless you have WAY too much time on your hands)and if you make a mistake (you will) you can go back to that point without starting over. This whole format will be familiar to those who have played MYST and this is every bit as difficult and every bit as interesting. As I have said before, it is very helpful to have a general knowledge of the layout of the ship and the timeline of events that night. Have fun! Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 23, 1998.

Oh and a P.S. . You will eventually run into Billy Carter's Reneault in the cargo hold sans steamed windows (very important point in the game!).

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 23, 1998.

Okay, I'm curious now. Why shouldn't you ask Officer Morrow if he wants a drink? Does he deck you or something?

-- Emma (dilemma76@hotmail.com), October 23, 1998.

Emma:

No, Officer Morrow won't deck you. (you'll get enough of that from Vlad later) but if you do, you will offend him and he will never let you in the wireless room. I think that if you screw up and make him mad by doing this, you still have one more chance to make it up to him (hence the binoculars).

Just act like his psychiatrist, and follow the "moonless nights" conversation, and you'll get on his good side.

cyas!

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 23, 1998.

Hey, it's me again. Hearing all of this, and considering I haven't really spent the time to get goin' on this game, when do the exciting parts begin to happen? I have started the game, but it takes me forever to just get out of the apartment, plus I have no idea where to go. You guys seem to know a lot more than I do! So after skipping around the ship for a while, and a while...and so on, when do things start to get moving? Thanks! Kelly :-)

-- Kelly (foo@bar.com), October 23, 1998.

Hi Kelly: Hmm... Iceberg right ahead.. and the clock ticks!

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 23, 1998.

Kelly, It takes a while to get out of the apartment but right after that you end up on titanic and with a simple knock on the door you're off and running. Officer morrow won't deck you if you offer him a drink just stick to curiouse questions about the war and you'll get into the wireless room more quickly than having to get the binoculars first:) One more tip. once you find the book HIDE it in another coal chute box and come back for it after Vlad leaves:) hope that helps everyone some:) Isn't this game one of the best you've ever played?! I had it and beat it before the movie ever came out but I still like to play just to see the ship:) Good luck everyone!

-- Miranda Swearingen (Kylen1@hotmail.com), October 24, 1998.

Kelly ( i think you are the one who asked this)

once you get out of the apartment and onboard, you can look around the room and mess with things, but if you just want to head out and get going, just grab your brown bag off the bed, and the pocket watch off the dresser. When you go to the door, Smithers will come and give you your first clue, and start you off. (You'll be heading up to the gymnasium to meet your contact, and she'll get you going after that.) The gymnasium looks EXACTLY like when Rose and Jack were standing in there before the flying scene, BTW. In fact, practically everything but the second class stairwells, which are wooden, not white, looks just like the movie.

Keep those questions a-comin!!!!!!!

=)

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 24, 1998.

I guess I'm not finding all the clues quickly enough. The game doesn't progress in real time. You have to find the clues and items you are looking for; you can't just wait in your room for the iceberg. Right now after 2 HOURS (!) of play, I'm stuck at 11:15. Vlad has taken the book, the painting has been ripped out of the frame in the cargo hold and I'm stymied. All I've got to show for my work is a pen, a pack of cigarettes, a diamond necklace, a ring, and several scraps of paper from the book. I've lost several fencing matches, traded insults with a stoker in boiler room 2, and played numerous hands of blackjack (for no apparent reason). The clue I might pursue next is a photo from Burns showing a man in the fourth funnel. But I don't know how to get up there. But my main concern: I've entered the bridge and made a slight course change. When exiting the bridge, Morrow corrects the course. Does this have any effect on when or whether the ship hits the berg or how much damage is done? If I get to 11:45 and haven't hit a berg I'm going to be VERY disappointed!

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 26, 1998.

Hey, about having the RING...have you gone to Trask yet to have him do a reading of it? If you haven't go. You are in for a surprise, once he does, and then you should be off and running again.

Josephine

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 26, 1998.

Hello Dalton: Although there are several different endings to the game, the one thing that does not change is the fate of the ship. Therefore, when it's "crunch time" (no pun intended) you won't be dissapointed!

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 26, 1998.

Thanks Josephine and Peter. I'm glad the ship will still sink (I guess) and I'll get a reading on that ring. How long does this game take to play? As I said, it's taken me 2 hours to get to 11:15. At my present rate of progress, how much time before I can see some action?! I'm assuming that acquiring the painting is the main goal. It must be concealing something. I figure the game won't even allow me off Titanic without possessing it, or discovering its secret. Since you can also send messages from the wireless, I have a feeling that's what I'll be doing since my briefcase might not be welcome on the boats. Which reminds me - Where will I find a lady's dress my size? hahaha.

BTW: If they ever build one of those Titanic replicas and I decide to tour it, I won't need a map. After two or three hours, I feel like I've actually been on the ship! And not to complain - this is a great game - but the characters have a certain artificial "Max Headroom" quality though. Is this typical of these CD ROM games?

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 26, 1998.

Ha ha ha, you can still crack me up Dalton. I'd love to see you trying to get on board a lifeboat in a dress. Eeekk! What a mental image ;-)

-- Emma (dilemma76@hotmail.com), October 26, 1998.

Emma, although there's no razor in my stateroom, perhaps I could pass off as one of those French chicks.

-- Dalton (foo@bar.com), October 26, 1998.

Hello Dalton: I was just into the game after several months and blew it. Do NOT refuse a deal Zietel on the boat deck. He will put a round into you and bye-bye! Hadn't gone that route before but now I know better. Fortunately, I had been saving the game right along (extremely important). Keep going back to P.P. until she has nothing new to offer but do what she says. As I said before, this ain't easy but you're gonna love it after the collision!

Regards, Peter

-- Peter Nivling (pcnivling@capecod.net), October 27, 1998.

Hey Dalton:

you are getting very close to seeing the action. Just keep following the clues and things will heat up. Once you go to the smokestack to get the notebook, there will be no turning back. (BTW, I recommend you save your game before you head to the ladder up the smokestack.) (BEFORE you talk to Vlad again)

As for the painting, I wouldn't say it is the most important. All four items are extremely important, for if you get 3 of them, your mission will still fail. (as you will see for yourself) just keep in mind that from the smokestack on, save frequently, unless you want to keep doing things over and over.

And trust me, even if you have everything you need and want to head to a lifeboat right away, they WILL make it hard for you! This game is great, cos just when you think you have THEM, they have YOU!! =)

Happy playing, and keep us posted as to your progress!

Any more questions, just ask!

Josephine

-- Josephine (jodiscott@msn.com), October 27, 1998.

Okay, I've played and beaten this game several times now but I never can seem to get the real necklace. Anyone have any clues? As best i can figure it's in Sasha's room but I never can get in there. I know it's poosiable cause a friend ofmine did it but I just can't seem to get the order of the clues right or something to get there!! Thanks:)

-- Miranda Swearingen (Kylen1@hotmail.com), November 01, 1998.

Yes, you do have to get in Sacha's room. Once there there is, on the dressing table I believe, a figure that is actually a safe of sorts. You have to get into the safe to find the real necklace, and that aint easy! Good luck!

-- kelly jones (kellyjones654@hotmail.com), December 24, 2004.

Kelly 1. The cigarettes should be hidden in the latticework above the table in teh Cafe. They are 'bulldog' brand, or something like that. 2. The seaman should be hanging around on the boat deck. A smokestack is another word for a funnel, or "chimney" on a ship. The fourth smokestack on the Titanic is fake. To climb the fourth smokestack, you need to first go to down to the engine room (the big one). There is a set of steps leadnig up from the walkway. To get through, you will have to bash up Vlad. Hope that helps.
