VCD picture and sound quality

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I recently purchased a VCD via the web and was disapointed with the picture and sound quality. It was a recent film still showing in cinemas.Obviously this was apirate copy but is it representative of VCD in general. It also contained Japanese subtitles which I found annoying.

Can I have the information about VCD picture and sound quality?

I don't think picture & sound quality are that bad - about equal to a VHS tape. Probably has more to do with your VCD being a pirate copy than anything.

The image and sound quality depend on the compression rate of the VCD. For instance, I have some films with an excelent image quality (more better than VHS). But it takes lot of space (3 CDs for about 2 hours). And there are some VCDs with audio cd sound quality.

First off get thee to a place that sells original video cds not pirates. www.video-cds.com is the best palce to start. Movies that are legally distributed(Touchstone/Disney sticks holograms on theirs as does Speedy Video to prove legality) are of better sound and picture quality. you can buy priates if you want but you sacrifice quality. Movies like Halloween H20 and The Wedding Singer from Speedy Video look almost like DVD. Another thing, when you buy pirates you don't know if they have subtitles or not. Buy from legal dealler so you know ahead of time. Hope this helps.
