Beautiful! There is just enough of a highlight on the heron's head to have it stand out from the dark background and I love the light on the leaves that surround the bird. Very nice.

The green leaves make a wonderful "garland" for the heron.

I like the composition in the photo, but on my screen the bird is barely visible. The pose is very "active". By the way, I believe this is typically called a "Green Heron" or "Green-backed Heron". I don't think there's a "Big Green Heron" version ..... :')

Since I didn't realize that I could actually add some comments with the image when I submitted it, here they are: It is indeed a green heron (Butorides striatus). Sorry about the wrong name in the title. The picture was taken in the Everglades NP at Echo Pond with a 300mm lens on a tripod. Metering was on the leaves. The bird was trying very hard to look like a piece of the local flora, so it wasn't really a very active pose. The Kodachrome 64 slide was scanned onto a PhotoCD, and the image was processed on a UNIX box. Sorry if the image looks too dark on your screens. It looked fine here straight of the PhotoCD, but I have since come to realize that my monitor hardly is the standard as far as colors go.

Ralph, I keep coming back to look at this shot. I love the sharpness of the green leaves balanced against the black space on the right with the perfect "pose" of the bird.
